designated a “wild and scenic river” by the department of the interior in 1970, the allagash is maine’s most popular canoe trip for a reason. lakes, river, tiny streams, waterfalls... this trip has it all!
A paddle down the Allagash transports you back in time. no houses, no cell service... just cold, clear water, winding through the forest, its path virtually unchanged for hundreds of years.
each morning we’ll paddle several miles to our next campsite, and in the afternoon there will be time to knit, read, swim, or just just hang out!
the itinerary we’ve planned is suitable for beginners. there will be some rapids, but don’t worry — we’ll teach you all the skills you need! the focus will be on moving our bodies in the sun, making connections, and just existing as people did for hundreds of years — humans, together in nature.

Nope! No experience required. our trips are extremely beginner friendly. Liana spent years as a camp counselor, teaching kids as young as 7-years-old to canoe.We’ll teach you all the skills you need to get downriver and by the end of the trip, you’ll feel like a pro! In addition to paddling skills, our trips are a great time to learn knots, wildlife ID, reading the river, map & compass, logging history, cooking over an open fire and wilderness baking. we’re happy to share our knowledge!

We eat well on the river. Canoeing is different from other types of camping because there’s plenty of room to bring lots of fresh, delicious ingredients. all our meals are be sautÉed, steamed, and baked over a campfire — yes, you can bake on a campfire! we’re happy to accommodate any dietary restrictions.

There’s no guarantee of seeing them, but we’ll be sharing the woods with many moose, otter, beaver, and bald eagles. you never know what’s waiting just downstream!

No! Isn’t that amazing?! our guides carry satellite communication devices in case of emergency, though. don’t worry!

we will provide a detailed packing list once you sign up for the trip! it’s mostly clothing items you probably already own. we firmly believe that you shouldn’t have to buy a bunch of new, highly-technical and expensive gear to go camping!!

Campsites on the waterway are rustic but comfortable, with picnic tables, fire pits, and outhouses.

Guides are up at first light – coffee, tea, and breakfast is ready shortly thereafter. We paddle for 3-6 hours per day, with a lunch break and many snack breaks along the way. We might be crossing lakes, maneuvering DOWNRIVER, or following small winding streams – it depends on the trip! We move camp each day and must travel a certain distance, but there is usually ample time in the afternoon for swimming, reading, knitting, or just relaxing.

Northern Maine has extremely variable weather. Highs in september range from 50°-70°, and lows can reach 30° at night. If it rains, it rains! But don’t worry – we have plenty of tricks up our sleeves to make camping in the rain comfortable and fun.

A $500 deposit is required to hold your spot on the trip — after that you’re welcome to pay in installments! However, you must be paid in full by September 16th.

The two trips will be very similar, and we encourage you to join whichever works best with your schedule! On this trip we’ll be paddling a bit further each day, and we’ll also get to do an especially fun section of whitewater, Chase Rapids. But don’t worry — even Chase is suitable for complete beginners!
